My 1st day as a volunteer today by Pooja Patel
Having been involved in the local community in Barking and Dagenham I wanted to try volunteering with older people.
So when I spoke to Lynne Hopkins at Barking and Dagenham Volunteer Centre Get Together Group she suggested to come along and watch how the group session was run and then decide. Well I couldnt hold back and took of my coat and got involved.
The friendliness of the members and the team work of the volunteers was amazing and when the session was over and I went home I knew I wanted to go back and volunteer.
3 hours flew past and what would I normally have done.
I know this much it was well spent and I felt good about myself and the new friends I have now made.
Lets hope anyone reading this comes along and gives up there 3 hours a week is forefilled like I do.
And just to add was being thoughtful ; best preparation for our tomorrow is the best we can do today apart from the worldly pleasures as fame .. money ... a run to attain a luxurious life , why not spend few hours of our present to attain self empowerment a feeling if satisfaction we done something somewhere as surely a few years later we will be @ the same receiving end where our heart will yield for somewhere someone anyone who could reciprocate such unconditional love & few moments of care which will make us feel loved & wealthy forever.
So nice to have feedback and especially our first one at Harp House.
Hi Jon, A really great GTG at Harp House. 17 new members who really enjoyed the morning. We finished with a chat with them all to find out what they wanted us to provide. They all joined in the discussion and came up with great ideas. It was very inspiring and they all said please come every week. The Manager and the Staff were superb. You could feel the great rapids between the Residents and all the Staff.
Because of the success of the Wednesday Get Together, we have formed a partnership with Harmony House and have now been awarded funding from the National Lottery to open 20 new Get Together Groups over the next 3 years across the borough of Barking and Dagenham for older people and people with, learning difficulties, additional or supportive needs.
The extension is Silvernet a programme to stop any isolated resident spending everyday in their homes and allow them to participate actively within their local community.
Here is a selection of photos taken from the Silvernet partnership open day.
Our members and Volunteers like to be involved in various activities.

Wanting to know more about becoming a Dementia Friend we have once again had Dementia Champion and trainer Emdad Rayman giving free training to more of our members, volunteers and local councillors Peter Chang and Jeanne Alexander.
Emdad explained :
A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action. Anyone and at any age can become a Dementia Friend.
